Animation and video games played a huge role in shaping that dream—and, in many ways, they helped shape the person I am today. These mediums not only sparked new creative ambitions but also gave me the confidence to express myself and my interests openly. As I got older, my fascination shifted from simply enjoying games and animation to wanting to understand how they were made. Today, I strive to be part of a team that creates the kinds of immersive, memorable experiences that inspired me growing up.

When it came time to seriously consider my path after high school, I started looking into majors that focused on game design. That led me to the University of Tampa’s New Media program. After sending out applications and weighing my options, I decided to commit to UT. However, after just one semester as a New Media major, I realized the technical side of the program wasn’t the right fit for me. I made the switch to a BFA in Animation—and that decision completely changed my college experience. The Animation program gave me the space to explore my creativity more fully while still developing valuable skills.

Since changing majors, I’ve been introduced to a wide range of programs and creative tools. One of the most transformative experiences was diving into 2D animation for the first time. I had always assumed I’d be more of a 3D artist, but that class completely flipped my perspective. Now, I’m driven to create more 2D animations of my own. That said, I still really enjoy 3D animation—especially modeling—and have found that I love the balance of both mediums. I’ve also had the chance to explore new creative spaces through classes like Sound, Image & Motion and Creative Coding, which pushed me outside my comfort zone in the best way. Even though those mediums might not be my primary focus, I’m proud of the work I created in those classes and grateful for the experience.

Now, as a second-semester junior at UT, I feel confident in my path and excited for what lies ahead. The classes I’ve taken have prepared me well, and I’m beginning to develop ideas for my senior project. I’m also seriously considering pursuing a master’s degree in Animation. Not only do I want to continue honing my skills , but I’ve also developed a strong interest in teaching. I’ve always enjoyed helping classmates and friends when they’re stuck, and the idea of one day teaching students who share the same passion I have is something that truly excites me.

Name: Sofia Whelchel Graduating: Spring 2026 BFA in Animation Ever since I was a kid, I’ve told my parents I… Read more STATEMENT

["post-45","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
